Gunshot Residue Test Kits

The examination of gunshot residue can disprove an assumption made falsely or mistakenly. For example, in the case of an apparent suicide involving a handgun, a gunshot residue collection should be done on the hands of the deceased. If no residue is found, the case could actually be a murder made to look like a suicide.

To protect this residue it is suggested to put brown paper bags (NEVER white paper bags or plastic bags) on the suspected shooter's hands and tape them around the wrist. The collection should be done at the earliest possible moment. If the suspected shooter is deceased and the collection cannot be done immediately, it is recommended that the hands be covered with brown paper bags by the coroner or medical examiner prior to moving the body.

There are two types of laboratory analysis which can be done on the collected residue. One is an Atomic Absorption (AA) Analysis and the other is using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). These collection kits come in three different styles. One kit is only for the AA process, one is only for the SEM examination, and the third kit contains supplies for both types of collection.

The AA test supplies consist of cotton swabs in tubes and a liquid chemical. The liquid is put on the cotton swabs and rubbed on the suspected shooter's hands. The cotton swabs are then placed back into the tubes and sent to the lab for analysis. The SEM examination supplies consist of metal discs (1/8" stub, 1/2" face) with adhesive on them. The discs are dabbed on the hands and the adhesive picks up the gunshot residue particles. The metal discs are then sent to the laboratory. Visible stains do not appear on the hands. The resulting data is obtained only by laboratory examination.

Which kit should you order? You will have to check with your local, regional or state criminalistic laboratory to find out which kit they are equipped to analyze. Not every laboratory has an SEM. Each kit is individually sealed in a 6" x 9" envelope and contains instructions, gloves, and an evidence label for resealing.
